Insights from Podfest Expo 2024

I just got back from Podfest Expo, and had a great time! I came away with some great business lessons, new friends, and some tips for you.

Lesson 1: Embrace the Chaos (Because We’re All Making It Up)

Okay, so, you know when you’re at a conference, and you’re sitting in those sessions, scribbling down notes like your life depends on it?

Well, turns out, we’re all kind of winging it. Lou Mongello, a podcasting pro with more episodes under his belt than I can count, dropped this truth bomb: “We’re all just making it up as we go along.”

And you know what? It’s oddly liberating.

So, next time you’re stressing about getting everything just right, remember—ain’t nobody got it all figured out.

Lesson 2: The Real Magic Happens in the Hallways

Sure, the sessions are great and all, but let me tell you, the real gems are found in those impromptu hallway chats.   It’s where conversations happen, and you never know who you’ll bump into. So, my advice? Don’t over-schedule yourself—leave some room in your schedule for those spontaneous connections.

Lesson 3: Work Hard, Play Harder (Explore Beyond the Conference)

Pro tip: when you’re picking which conferences to hit up, think about more than just the sessions.

Consider the location, too! Orlando was the perfect backdrop for some pre-conference fun, and let me tell you, hitting up Disney with fellow podcasters was a highlight for sure. So, next time you’re planning your conference calendar, factor in some extra adventure time.

Lesson 4: Make Friends, Not Just Contacts

Last but not least, let’s talk networking.  I am so bad at this!  And get so nervous before a conference just thinking about it!

Sure, it’s great to swap business cards and LinkedIn profiles, but there’s something special about making real connections. Whether it’s over dinner or at a meetup, take the time to get to know your fellow conference-goers. You never know—they could become your next collaborators, cheerleaders, or lifelong friends.

So, there you have it—my top takeaways from Podfest Expo. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie on the scene, conferences like these are a goldmine of inspiration, learning, and good times. So, next time you’re gearing up for a conference, remember to keep an open mind, soak up the experience, and maybe even make a few new podcasting pals along the way.

Catch you on the flip side, folks! Happy podcasting!

Why are your broadcasts always set at such a low volume? The lead in music and ending music is very loud, but I have to max out my controls to listen to your voice content. If it was too loud the listener can always turn it down.
